Post Cabinet Briefing for Monday, August 15, 2016

    Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 16, 2016 (SKNIS): The formal meeting of the Cabinet took place on Monday, August 15, 2016. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

     

    1. Cabinet received a comprehensive update from the chairperson of the 33rd Independence Anniversary Planning Committee, Senator the Honourable Wendy Colleen Phipps. Cabinet gave its final approval to the theme for this year’s Independence Anniversary Celebrations which is “Prosperity through Sustainability and National Unity.” Also, Cabinet gave endorsement to the Calendar of Events for Independence 33 which will include among other events, the Independence State Service of Thanksgiving; the Prime Minister’s Lecture Series; The Independence Day Military Parade; the Independence Reception at Government House; and Community Volunteerism Day. The official Calendar of Events will be available to the general public shortly. Cabinet registers its gratitude to the Honourable Senator, Wendy Phipps and members of the Independence 33 Committee for their work in organizing and coordinating this year’s Independence Day activities.

    2. Cabinet received a visit from a high level security delegation headed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Osmond Petty. The delegation included members of the Regional Security System (RSS). Cabinet was apprised of several security initiatives to be implemented within the short, medium and long term to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. The Treaty Establishing the Regional Security System was signed in 1996. The Governments of the contracting states came to agree that the stability and well-being of the Caribbean region can best be promoted by co-operation; wishing to maximize their strength in the interest of the defence of their states and to achieve social and economic development for their people; and seeking to preserve the common heritage of their people founded on the principles of democracy, liberty of the individual and the rule of law. Membership of the System is open to the following States: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  

    3. Cabinet suspended its meeting of Monday, August 15, in order for its members to attend the funeral service for the celebration of the life of Eldon Incely Jones, a well-known Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor. The service took place at the Wesley Methodist Church on August 15. Cabinet resumed on Tuesday, August 16, to discuss issues related to the soon upcoming Parliament and other matters.
