Campers given demonstration of renewable energy functions

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St Kitts - AS the Federation makes attempts to shift from such a heavy dependency on fossil fuel to renewable energy, the younger generation is receiving valuable lessons in the benefits of this thrust.

Approximately 140 children are currently participating in Operation Future’s two-week summer camp which has renewable energy and the environment as its focus.

While life skills teachings and fun-filled activities are incorporated into the experience, the children are expected to develop a proper understanding of the various types of renewable energy and how they function.

The children were divided into groups, each representing either geothermal energy, wind energy, solar energy, plant life, water or marine life.

As part of the experience, Operation Future’s Founder and President Officer Lauston Percival indicated that a man who understands the operations of and who uses renewable energy to power his home was invited to chat with the campers.

“…We have different groups depicting the different areas. The reason why we have taken the stance to do this this year is everybody is focusing on the environment, how and what we can do to help the environment. And because we are so dependent on fossil…we want to educate the children more about renewable energy because we have sunshine all year round and we have wind and we are hearing about geothermal coming on stream for both St. Kitts and Nevis.”

A man by the name of Justin Caines was invited to the camp to address the campers on the benefits of renewable energy as opposed to fossil fuel-centred energy.

“So we thought it best to educate the children so they could know what they are and when they hear about them it wouldn’t be anything strange. When they are asked questions about it, they would be able to answer.

“What we did is we had someone come into the camp in the person of Justin Caines and he has been doing this for a lot of different schools and summer camps. So he came in and spoke to the children. He brought some of the equipment that he demonstrates with and he uses at his house also. He had the solar panels and the wind turbines. He explained to the children exactly what they were and how they are used and he gave a demonstration…”

During this week, the campers are expected to visit the solar farm at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, St. Kitts Marine Works and KM Nursery.

Officer Percival said it is his hope that the knowledge the children glean from the camp would be taken back to their homes and educate their siblings, parents and other family members.
