BVI, 25 August 2016 - Flashing traffic lights will be observed in Road Town for a trial period of one month to evaluate any potential security risks to motorists at night while waiting at the traffic lights.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr. Anthony McMaster said that the traffic lights were switched to a flashing mode between the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and that the trial period is for one month in the first instance.
Mr. McMaster said, “We have received these suggestions from motorists who felt unsafe at nights when they are sitting and waiting for the light to turn green between these hours. Because of these concerns, the ministry along with the traffic department at public works have decided to programme the lights to ‘caution mode’, which is the flashing you will see, that allows motorists to proceed with caution instead of sitting and waiting in low lit areas.”
Mr. McMaster said, “In the case of caution lights, it is customary to slow down, look both ways and then proceed when the road way is clear. If two or more vehicles arrive at the junction, right of way will be given to the motorist who arrived at the junction first.”
Motorists are asked to adhere to speed limits drive with extreme care when the caution lights are enabled and to abide by all traffic rules.
The Ministry of Communications and Works has indicated that after the one month trial period, the findings and reports will determine the next steps of the traffic lights.
Flashing amber lights, after hours, is a regular occurrence in several jurisdictions including Italy, France, Germany, Australia and the US.
