Torrential rain causes low water pressure in St. Peter’s Area

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE tropical disturbance that recently passed nearby St. Kitts and Nevis and brought with it torrential downpours, has left residents in the St. Peter’s area with decreased supplies of water and in some cases none at all.

The problem which has been in existence for the last two days is due to clogged pipelines in the Green Hills area resulting from the rainfall, SKNVibes was informed.

Acting Water Services Manager Dennison Paul explained that the water supply to parts of the St. Peter’s area comes from a source in Green Hill, Cayon, and with the torrential rains “silt and clogging of some of the pipelines” affected that area’s supply.

Additionally, he stated that water which comes from Ogees and which supplies other parts of the area, also had silt in the pipelines which resulted in some residents not receiving any supply.

“Yesterday our guys braved it and went up to Green Hill to clean out that source. The work took sometime and when we got back water was flowing into that tank, and by the evening the water stopped flowing.

“The guys went back up there this morning to do all of the same clearing work and removal of silt which is required after torrential rainfall.”

He is hopeful that the supply would be back on by late this afternoon or sometime this evening.

Meanwhile, Paul disclosed that the pump supplying Molineux, Phillip's and Borryeaux is back up and running after it was down for just over a week.

The pump located in Mansion, was recently commissioned and was placed out of service due to some technical difficulties.

“It was a well that served the village of Mansion, and so we had retrofitted it and it now supplies Phillip’s, Molineux and Borryeaux. When we had the issue it was just being commissioned after the work where we laid some 8000 feet of pipeline and we put a new well in. When we commissioned it there was a technical issue which we rectified and it took us about a week to rectify the problem and that pump has been supplying the areas.”

The water supply has been on in the areas for the last two weeks, the Water Services Manager told SKNVibes.
