Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 26, 2016 (SKNIS): A group of thirty (30) nursery assistants from a number of selected nurseries and daycare centres within the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis gathered at the Industrial Day Care Centre at the CAP Southwell Industrial Park on August 25 to participate in a series of workshops for ongoing professional development. The workshops are being conducted in collaboration with the Basic Trust Needs Fund (BTNF) and the TVET (Technical Vocational Education Training) Council.
Retired Early Childhood Coordinator Vanta Walters said that these formal trainings are done in an attempt to aid early childhood nursery assistants in the field.
“Each trainee, they have to pretend that each of them is a public health nurse and they are giving a lecture to a group of teenage mothers. They are involved in research and making charts on the stages of prenatal development,” said Mrs. Walters, while highlighting that after the training they will be teaching teenage mothers on prenatal care.
“The officers at the Early Childhood Unit have always been concerned about the fact that the nursery workers didn’t have the opportunity to access any formal training in this field.” she said
The three month programme is done with the underlining objective of providing nursery assistants with experience, training and a wide scope of knowledge that could be applied in nurseries and daycare centres across the Federation.
Mrs. Walters explained that the workshop focuses on three main modules: Stages of Child Development; Safety and Well-Being of Children; and Developing Quality Customer Service.
According to the retired early childhood coordinator (who has worked in the field for over 20 years) these objectives are brought to life by way of intense research that is being done by the nursery assistants and is portrayed via power point presentations and charts.
Mrs. Walters said that she is happy that the early childhood workers are given the chance to take part in the workshop and that she hopes that this may be a stepping stone towards the development of early childhood in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
