Carnival Committee guarding against copyright infringement

National Carnival Chairman, Noah Mills

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE process of registration for participation in 2016/2017 National Carnival events will be off to an early with the commencement date being set for Thursday (Sept. 1).

The Carnival Committee – headed by Noah Mills – has been issuing messages via social media informing stakeholders that “registration for Carnival 2016-17 will open on September 1st and run until September 15th”.

During these 15 days, prospective participants of the various shows and events are expected to “submit all required documents by 4:00 pm” on the final day.

These individuals include those interested in the calypso and soca shows, pageants, vendors and marshalls.

Chairman Mills, while speaking with SKNVibes explained that one of the main reasons for the early registration call is the implementation of a new process which would see the screening of calypso and soca material before they could be used.

He said the new process – which was conceptualized since last year - is called the Intellectual Property Rights Violation Assessment for which a committee would be established.

The four-part process would see the committee meeting to examine lyrics and music before these could be used by the artistes in the tents.

The committee – which Mills said would be independent – would meet a second time to examine the lyrics and music before they could be used during the elimination process. They would meet two more times prior to the semi-finals and the finals.

“It’s going to be an independent committee made of up deejays, former judges, calypsonians, artistes, gospel artistes… this was designed to protect calypsonians and soca artistes. In today’s world when intellectual property rights violations can lead to lawsuits not only for artistes but even for the organisers…we are saying ‘help us to protect you by reviewing your material ahead of time’.”

Mills informed that for all of these processes to run as smoothly as possible, registration must take place early.

He said the first tent is scheduled for October 30 and informed that unregistered individuals would not be allowed to participate.

Regarding the committee, the Carnival Chairman said the recruitment process has already begun and that a number of individuals have already agreed to lend their expertise.
