Primary School students could soon be involved in carnival adult parade

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Director of Culture, Troy Mills has indicated that consideration is being given to have primary schools involved in the 2016/2017 Carnival Parade.

This disclosure came while he recently addressed parents and graduands of the Zack ‘Dr. of Culture’ Nisbett annual summer musical workshop.

Mills said that the Department of Culture will continue to contribute to Nisbett in order to ensure that he will carry out other similar projects.

Accordingly, he explained that while that is the case, the Government will continue to hold discussions so that he can go into the primary schools and share his expertise with staff and students.

To this end, Mills indicated that, “What we are hoping to have them do for this year’s Children Carnival is to have four, five or six primary schools come on board to do the masquerade, the mockajumbies etc., as part of the Children’s Carnival and perhaps, with the permission of the parents, have them be involved in the senior Carnival”.

By becoming involved in such activities, the Director said, these children could be exposed to opportunities to exhibit their skill and craft to tourists who visit our shores. Thus, they could benefit financially from this exposure to culture, especially during the peak of the cruise season.

The one-month workshop, which wrapped up on Saturday (Aug. 27), saw students being trained to play a number of musical instruments including the guitar.

During the graduation ceremony held in Lime Kiln, the students played several songs for those gathered.

Nisbett told the gathering that the workshop has been held for the past 10 years.

Director Mills pointed out that Nisbett has been instrumental in a number of cultural projects and as result the Government, through the Department of Culture, would continue to be supportive of the work he undertakes.
