Nevis returns 80 percent passes at CAPE and CSEC

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  DESPITE the Ministry of Education on St. Kitts still analyzing the May/June 2016 Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) results, the Nevis Island Administration has reported an 80% pass rate for that island’s educational institutions.

     

    Premier and Minister of Education in the Nevis Island Administration the Hon. Vance Amory, in a statement issued yesterday (Sept. 2), said there was a total of 662 entries for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), of which 626 were written and 526 of those candidates or 84 percent gained passes. 

     

    For the CSEC examinations, Nevis also saw an overall pass rate of 80% or 1,115 subject passes.

     

    The Education Minister, who provided detailed statistics, indicated that 1,458 subject were entered, of which 1399 exams were sat.

     

    He confirmed that the Gingerland Secondary School’s Ron-J Williams was recognized as the most outstanding student on the island.

     

    Williams gain passes in the 17 subjects he sat at the regional examination – all with grade ones.

     

    “I think this is a very commendable effort and the young man, I think, has a bright future but so do all of our students and as Minister who is responsible for Education in the Nevis Island Administration, I wish to commend all of our students who have done well in the examinations,” Amory said.

     

    Breaking down the statistics, Amory pointed out that a number of educational institutions saw increased passes including the Gingerland Secondary School, which saw an eight percent increase from 2015, this year’s rate stands at 92%. 

     

    “The Sixth Form pass rate improved from 81 percent to 84 percent in 2016.  The two government schools combined attained an 83 percent pass rate. The Gingerland Secondary increased from 84 percent to 92 percent while the Charlestown Secondary maintained its 81 percent pass rate,” explained Amory.

     

    Further he stated that, “The Nevis International Secondary School, registered a slight increase in the number of students writing the examinations, as well as the number of subjects written. Seven students and 22 subjects were written.  They maintained a pass rate of 45 percent.”

     

    The Minister revealed that there continues to be a steady increase of private candidate registration with 206 students registering this year – with a pass rate of 67%.

     

    “At the Sixth Form, the most individual Units attempted over a two-year period was 10.”

     

    At the Charlestown Secondary School, Ronicia Liburd topped that institution with 11 grade one passes.

     

    The Federal Government on St. Kitts reportedly has not set a time frame on when they would make a statement on the official statistics for the entire Federation, despite having the results for close to a month.
