Government to conduct study on fallout from possible Trump’s Presidency

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS candidates in the United States of America presidential race continue their push to the November election date, politicians in the Caribbean region are keenly monitoring the outcome.

According to Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, his Government would be carry out an evaluation to see what impact both candidates would have on St. Kitts and Nevis.

Responding to a question from a caller on WINN FM’s Voices programme yesterday (Sept. 7) about the possible deportation of nationals from St. Kitts and Nevis should Donald Trump become President, the Federation’s Political Leader indicated that “it is one for an ongoing study”.

He added that it is not only a possible Trump’s presidency that needs monitoring, but also that of the former Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton.

“We must also attempt to do an evaluative study on what will happen to us as a Caribbean region, because the policies would not be unique to St. Kitts and Nevis by large measure but to the region as a whole…”

In recent times, many people have been sounding the alarm bells that the region would not be able to continue benefiting from a number of policies the United States currently have in place in the Caribbean if Trump is elected.

But Dr. Harris stated that consideration must be given on how the region would benefit from both the Republican and Democrat presidential candidates should either of them be elected.

Trump, the Republican presidential nominee has been talking tough on immigration, including that he would deport a number of undocumented immigrants.

“That has to a matter that we listen as the policy frame evolves in relation to it. Donald Trump has started with a very hard policy with respect to deportation. Even this morning when you look at the news you are hearing that that policy is being further crystallized and some may say soften. So we are not yet sure what precisely the deportation order may mean,” Dr. Harris declared.

He noted that what is known about the refinement of the policy is that those who have been involved in very serious criminal acts would be the first to be deported.

Recent statistics indicated that St. Kitts and Nevis is one of a few Caribbean countries that do not have mass deportation of its national living in that North American country.

“What would be of concern would be those who would have no illegal act...who have been good citizens and would have overstayed,” Dr. Harris posited.

PM Harris noted that there has been an evolution in the immigration on Trump’s ticket and now it is just a time to wait and see what the exact policy is.
