Federation gains increase in CAPE passes

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –  FOLLOWING weeks of heavy criticisms from the Opposition, St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, and some members of the public, Minister of Education the Hon. Shawn Richards has now officially released the results for the Federation at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Certificate Examination (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

     

    According to Richards, who made the disclosure in a televised addressing last evening (Sept.23), St. Kitts and Nevis saw an increase of 0.3% in its national pass average at the CAPE.

    Providing statistics, the Minister disclosed that for 2016 some 519 students sat a total of 48 Units at the CAPE, which comprised 1,923 subject entries; an increase from last year’s 1855.

    The Minister disclosed that from the 1,923 entries, 1,649 were successful, which denote a pass rate of 85.7%; up from 2015’s 85.84%, and 84.66% in 2014.

    CFBC saw decreased entries this year, with only 300 students registering for the examination - 71 less than last year.

    He however revealed that 1,306 subject entries were made and 1,130 were successful, an average of 85.22%.

    The Education Minister said the number of subject that returned 100% passes include Applied Science, Computer Science, Digital Media Units 1 and 2, History Unit 1, Biology, Chemistry, Economics Units 1&2 and Integrated Mathematics.

    At the Nevis Sixth Form College, 141 candidates sat the examinations with a total of 661 subject entries; 519 of those entries returning passes.

    This, Minister Richards noted, equates to an overall pass rate of 84.1%, which surpassed last year’s 81.46% in 2015, adding that a number of subject areas returning 100% passes.

    “I would like to congratulate the students and lecturers at the Nevis Sixth Form College and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies for their diligence in most instances that have contributed to another year of sterling performance by our students. I also commend the parents for their support,” Minister Richards said.

    Meanwhile, the Federation’s top CAPE students from the CFBC are Filmon Roberts with six Grade Ones, Azuredee Mills with four Grade Ones and Javonne Nisbett also with four Grade Ones. Two other students also gained four Grade Ones while six of them gained three Grade Ones. And those from the Nevis Sixth Form College are Orian Stapleton with four Grade Ones, while Aejari Browne, Cheslyn Maloney and Kamil Wilkin achieved three Grade Ones.
