Latin Festival promises to be bigger and better this year

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LATIN FESTIVAL, one of the biggest events on the Federation’s calendar of activities has been hailed as one of the important features that promote cultural diversities.

Those were the sentiments echoed by Minister of Culture, the Hon. Shawn Richards, who was at the time speaking at the launch of the 2016 event at Mojitos, on Thursday (Sept.29).

He stated that since its inception, the Festival has come a long way in its seven-year history, adding that it has made a name for itsself as “the premier event that seeks to promote cultural diversity and appreciation among the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and Latin America”.

The uniqueness of the Festival, Richards noted, is that it celebrates the Latin heritage not as being something foreign, but rather integrating it into the Kittitian and Nevisian love of music and dance.

“Every modern society experiences this change to its cultural makeup. There are those societies that boast of cultural plurality – a system which tolerates different heritage of groups within their societies.”

Minister Richards pointed out that St. Kitts and Nevis is one of those countries that embrace various cultures and practices of all people, so that the people of the Federation could share to make the country better together.

According to the Minister, the Festival started as a showcase of the Latin culture and has been integrated into the local culture.

The Festival creator, Jose Rosa, noted that the idea started during a casual conversation amongst a group of people and it has since evolved to be one of the biggest in St. Kitts and Nevis.

He commended those sponsors who came on board for this year’s event.

This year’s event will commence on Monday (Oct. 17) and it was announced that the Festival Committee would be bringing a 31-member contingent to provide entertainment over a seven-day period.

The Latin Festival will culminate with a live concert on Sunday (Oct. 23) at Port Zante and will feature Trinidad’s 2015 Soca Monarch Olatunji, Cuba’s all-female band Anacaona, Batukealo and DJ Red Noise from Puerto Rico.
