Lord Kut
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VETERAN calypsonian Lord Kut has released a possible Calypso Monarch competition piece for Sugar Mas 45 in which he appears to be taking the Carnival Chairman to task for what he believes is “spoiling a good thing”.

Last Friday (Sept. 31), Lord Kut released his song ‘No Money’ which, according to reports, is already receiving promising reviews from members of the public.

SKNVibes Entertainment spoke with the calypsonian this morning (Oct. 6) and he explained that the song – which he had been writing since the beginning of this year – is his artistic compilation of complaints that reached his ears over the past several months.

He said his complaints about a particular difference in the practices of the former Carnival Chairman – Sylvester Anthony – and the current Chairman – Noah Mills - are also what inspired him to write the song.

Lord Kut explained that a couple of years ago, it was instituted that each calypsonian who would perform under the tents would receive $50 and those who made it to the Semi-Final round would receive a $500 preparation fee. And a $1000 preparation fee was given to those who made it to the Finals.

The seasoned calypsonian said this was commendable and redounded to the benefit of the artistes. He said a different picture was however painted since the Chairman’s seat was differently-occupied.

“We are accustomed to getting certain things from the Chairman before. In 43 years, the first time I start getting money is two years ago. I never got a cent for 41 years. The Chairman (Anthony) came on the scene and he decided that each artiste who sings in the tents get $50. This was tremendous because it was an improvement.

“He decided when artistes make the Semi-Finals, you got $500 as a preparation fee. He made a tremendous change. Now the Carnival is 45 years old, I participate in the competition for 43 years, so you see the wealth of experience under several Chairmen. So when I speak about the Chairman’s performance, this is concrete. The current Chairman (Noah Mills), I had to fight him last year to get the $500 preparation fee.”

Lord Kut said the fee was actually paid last year but claimed that he had gotten some resistance before it could have been agreed upon.

He said he got two earfuls from band men, mas makers, artistes etc. who participated in Sugar Mas 44 and were displeased with the fact that some of them had to wait for months before they could be paid what was owed to them.
These “odds and pieces” and others are what Lord Kut said inspired him to write his ‘No Money’ song.

In seeking to give advice to the current Carnival Chairman, Lord Kut expressed, “If a system is met running a certain way, you should try to improve upon it”.
