BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE organisers of the Calypso Tents for Sugar Mas 45 will have to seek alternative sponsorship as the Carnival Committee has pulled the plug on the subsidy bill it previously footed.

Wingrove Hicks, Manager of the Grand Masters Band which organizes the Proud Sounds Tent – told SKNVibes that he was informed by the Carnival Chairman that the tents would no longer receive the monetary backing of the Carnival Committee.

Hicks explained that after the tents began being held some years ago, public support began to dwindle but the then Carnival Chairman, Sylvester Anthony, initiated a subsidy through the Carnival Committee for the tents. He noted that this was for better promotion of the tents as well as better promotion of Sugar Mas in general.

This assistance, Proud Sound Tent Leader explained, continued last year under the chairmanship of Noah Mills but would not be done for this year’s Sugar Mas.

“They informed us this year that they would no longer be organizing the tents, so they asked us to go back to organizing the tents on our own. Mr. Mills informed us that the Carnival Committee would no longer be in control, so we will be back to what we used to do. However, the Carnival Committee has consented to assist in the promotion of the tents this year.”

Hicks told this publication that in addition to the Carnival subsidiary, “We had some small sponsorship, but with the subsidiary from Carnival we were able to make ends meet, so to speak. The tents struggled in the past to pay calypsonians at the end of the tent season. All that was taken over by the Carnival Committee and so the bands did not have to bear that responsibility.”

The Grand Masters Manager said because additional sponsorship is now needed, he has begun to seek support.

“…Even though the tents were subsidized by sponsors and Carnival, the overall monies for tents was not sufficient to pay for a tent, but we all recognized that and we were all willing to work in the interest of Carnival. It was not about the money, but in the interest of Carnival.”

Hicks said if they are not able to secure the funding needed to host the tents, they would be “minimized”.

The musician said the tents are scheduled to kick off during the last week in October.

The Legends Calypso Tent is also expected to be part of this year Sugar Mas activities.
