BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts - THE Latin Festival Committee yesterday (Oct. 19) took its Cultural Workshop to students at two schools in the Federation as part this year’s week of activities.
Now in its seventh year, the Latin Festival has become one of the trademark events on the calendar of activities for St. Kitts and Nevis, and this year the committee is continuing with its Cultural Workshops.
Annually, the Committee invites various secondary schools to participate in workshops that they would carry out in order to bring various aspects of the Latin culture to students.
This year, the Committee had chosen Cayon High School and the Immaculate Conception Catholic School.
According to a Committee member, the event was well attended and the students were able to learn about the very Latin art and craft.
In addition, the Committee held one of its art exhibitions which provided local artists and craft makers an opportunity to showcase their work.
“Here at the Latin Festival Village, we have local artists and craft vendors. Today, Wednesday, we have an exhibition of three of them, and we are expecting about four or five more,” the Committee member said.
A number of international artists are also expected to exhibit their work at the location from Wednesday through to the end of the activities on Sunday evening.
Sue DeBuck-Woodard, a foreign national who resides in the Federation, told SKNVibes that most of her paintings that were on display took inspiration from the local landscape.
“I love the flowers, the ocean; it’s a constant inspiration for me. I have been painting for a very long time but since I have been here, I can’t help but paint because of the scenery.”
This year’s Latin Festival is the Cuban edition and will culminate with the annual Latin Fiesta on Sunday (Oct. 23) at the Festival Village on Port Zante.
