Latin Festival hits the Catwalk with Fashion Show

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THUNDEROUS applauses rocked the Royal St. Kitts Hotel’s Conference Room last evening (Oct. 21) when several Cuban designers placed their work on display.

Four Cuban international designers had several of their models and also a number of others from the local Movado Model Agency strutting the runway in a display of what could be considered mostly hand-painted work.

Before a near capacity crowd, the evening opened with the more than 10 local models strutting the runway with elegantly painted designs by Mariela Aleman, which included several pieces that caught the attention of those in attendance.

The designs highlighted the intricacies behind fabric designing, Aleman told SKNVibes after the event, explaining that her pieces and colours for the show were inspired by Frida Kahlo.

Each of her 10-plus pieces on display took approximately three to four days to put together, largely due to the continuous painting that goes into each design.

The night’s event was capped off with several intriguing pieces of work, including a bicycle-inspired design and a metallic piece that was complimented by a robotic model.

That particular model captivated the audience who gave him a standing ovation.

Speaking with SKNVibes via an interpreter, the designers commended the response received from those in attendance, pointing out that  they were skeptical about the response they would have gotten during the event.

Young and popular artistes Khyla Brown and Dejour entertained the crowd with the latter performing his popular songs, ‘The One’ and ‘Love Portion’.

This event formed part of the week of activities for Latin Festival Seven which will culminate with the Latin Fiesta tomorrow (Oct. 23) on Port Zante.
