    Construction to begin next year

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE promised construction of the new Basseterre High School, which was scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of this year, will not be undertaken until sometime in 2017.

This announcement was made on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at the Prime Minister’s press conferences by Minister of Education Hon. Shawn Richards, who disclosed that Pond Site, one of five areas considered for constructing the new institution, was the chosen location.

The old Victoria Road campus, a plot of land located opposite the Medical University, Shadwell and another site in Ponds, were the other locations under consideration.

“I suppose that we will not be able to begin construction during the course of this year, but what we have since done is to put a committee in place. That committee is supposed to be meeting this coming Friday (Oct. 28) to advise Cabinet on the way forward with regards to the construction,” the Minister disclosed.

According to Richards, on September 30 Cabinet arrived at an agreement on Pond Site as the new location for the school.

“Coming from all the reports that had been received, the decision had been taken to locate the Basseterre High School in the Pond Site area.”

He stated that a committee was established by the Government to carry out further checks into the selected areas; those being Shadwell and Pond Site.

“Cabinet had several concerns with the sites and the Cabinet decided to be very diligent in ensuring that at the end of the day the site that was chosen would be considered the site for the new Basseterre High School,” Minister Richards said.

For several years Basseterre High School has been a controversial topic where both the Team Unity Administration and the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party had blamed each other for using the issue to gain political milage.

During those years, students and teachers allegedly complained about a number of illnesses being caused by the facility, but several top health institutions in the region carried out tests at the Victoria Road campus and they all submitted inconclusive reports.

Since taking office last year, the Government had pledged to not have the students returned to that facility and they removed furniture and a block from the campus and constructed a temporary facility in Taylor’s to house the teachers and students.

In the 2016 Budget, the Government had allocated $10M for the construction of a new facility.
