Rucas out to ‘Sway’ the crowd at Soca Monarch Competition

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DUBBED as one of the top young artistes in the Soca arena, Rucas H.E has his eyes fixed on winning the top Groovy prize at the 2016/2017 Carnival Soca Monarch Competition.

Competing only in the Groovy category with his piece ‘Sway’, Rucas, born Casin Pemberton, spoke to the concept behind the lyrics he hopes would dethrone the reigning Monarch, Nicha B.

In an interview with SKNVibes, Rucas stated that ‘Sway’ forms part of the tribal rhythm that was produced earlier this year by the Magician and Banks Production.

He declared that it features an Afro-Soca beat and is patterned off several new dance moves he created.

“The reason I am calling this one Sway is because there are dance movements that were created and I dubbed it ‘Sway’,” Rucas laughingly said.

The young government employee said the piece would be very catchy while indicating that he “stands a fair chance of walking away victorious”.

“Sway has been getting a lot of airplay right now. It is not only being played in St. Kitts and Nevis, it is also playing in St. Lucia, Grenada, Anguilla and a few other islands. So I think the chance of me winning is very high. I have been getting positive feedbacks from my fans; people are even calling on me to do different shows.”

The very jovial and charismatic Rucas, who has an imposing presence on stage, hinted that his cards are still on the table that he could do the double at the next Carnival despite it being over 12-month away.

“I wanted to do a power song to enter into the Power segment this year, but based on certain circumstances things didn’t work out my way. So, I just had to enter ‘Sway’ into the Groovy segment.”

Giving his perspective on the recent controversy surrounding Article Six, which most Soca artiste signed onto but the calypsonians did not, Rucas said: “I don’t see anything wrong with it! I think in all fairness everybody should be creative within themselves.

“I personally don’t see an issue with it. If it is part of the rules and if you want to be part of the competition, then, hey, if that is what they are asking for then send in the lyrics. I however do have a few more questions that I would like to ask.”

Rucas explained that in order for an artiste to put down a winning performance, he or she would have to make a lot of financial investments. To this end, he indicated that he would like to see an increase in prize monies.

“When you invest all of this money, yes you do get back some but the winnings don’t always cover what you put in.”

Despite that, however, he commended the Carnival Committee for its continued payment of preparation fees which go a long way in offsetting a number of expenses.

SKNVibes understands that the 2016/2017 Carnival activities are expected to kick off on Friday (Nov. 18).
