Increased registration for Sugar Mas 45

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THERE is an obvious increase in registration for participation in the Sugar Mas 45 Competitions, Carnival Chairman Noah Mills has informed.

Mills told SKNVibes Entertainment that when compared with the registration/participation for Sugar Mas 44, those for this year are encouraging.

He spoke specifically to the Calypso and Soca Competition.

“There is a registration increase this year over last year for Soca and Calypso. I can tell you this much; we have some of the big guns coming back, having registered that is.

“For example, Phonsie has registered, Star Shield has registered, Socrates has registered and they have been out of it. In the case of Socrates, maybe two or three years…the others, maybe 10 years or more. So we are very impressed with the turnout that we’ve seen so far of the individual competitions that we are going to have.”

He said there is a notable increase in the Female Calypso Competition, which has seen almost double the number of registrants, and also an increase in the Junior Calypso Competition.

“We had a total of about 14 (for Junior Calypso), we now have 17. So all of the individual categories for competition, registration numbers have skyrocketed and we have been very much impressed.

“It shows that people are seeing the positive in what we are doing, this Carnival Committee, and they are becoming more and more interested in not only participating in competitions but being a part of giving back to Carnival and by extension the Federation.”

The Chair explained that work is being done to recruit contestants from particular learning institutions to participate in the Talented Teen Competition.

“Also for the Talented Teen, we have approached the non-traditional institutions. For example, we couldn’t understand why the CFBC and AVEC and those other institutions were never targeted. So we went to them last year. They said that it was a little late for them, but we are trying to recruit representatives for them.

“Similarly, we are also recruiting representatives from Nevis, from the highschools to participate in in the Talented Teen.”

Sugar Mas 45 is expected to officially kick off later this month.
