BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NOT known as one of the top performers in the local Soca circle, Dejour Alexander is looking to make a name for himself when he competes in the 2016/2017 Carnival Groovy Soca Monarch Competition.

The young entertainer, who has a way of charming the ladies when he performs, has entered the competition with his piece ‘Don’t Care’.

Giving an insight into the song, Alexander stated that it is for people who are looking to enjoy the Carnival and J'ouvert and that they must be able to let everything go and just “Don’t Care”.

“Well, people who live in St. Kitts know that around Carnival time is just a bunch of people just watching each other; so the song is just relating what is happening and it is calling on the people to rejoice, release the energy and the vibes. The song ‘Don’t Care’ came about to basically explain that…just don’t sit and watch anybody just enjoy yourself.”

With the Soca eliminations still a few weeks away, Alexander has been working hard to devise a winning strategy and he has expressed optimism that he could go all the way despite not being an entertainer in this genre of music.

“As far as winning, I just prefer to leave that up to the judges and everything, but my intention is just to go out there and do the best that I could and hope that results go my way.”

The young performer has indicated that he is in full support of the move implemented by the National Carnival Committee (NCC) to vet music for the possibility of plagiarism.

“It is a good move I would say,” Alexander said, “I think it should have been there a long time.”

According to the calendar of activities released by the NCC, the competition kicks off on November 24 with the first set of eliminations.
