BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IT was the fitting end to a highly competitive evening of pageantry on Friday (Nov. 11) at Carnival Village, as Miss Sandy Point Fire Station copped the Fire and Rescue Welfare pageant title.

The competition, which was poorly organized, saw the representative of Sandy Point Fire Station, Charity Marenborough, amassing 545 points to walk away victorious while Charlestown Fire Station’s Shewma Green-Henry taking the First Runner-up spot with 494 and Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Fire Hall’s  Cinnamon Matthew being adjudged Second Runner-up with 441.5 points.

Getting off to a very late start, the pageant featured three judged segments - Evening Wear, Talent and Promotional Speech.

The Promotional Speech saw each of the five delegates presenting themselves and the individual district fire service that they represented.

Green-Henry, one of the senior contestants, topped that segment with 130 points.

The night, however, belonged to fallen Fire Officer Javier ‘Percy’ Caines, as his colleagues paid tribute to him.

A number of delegates sang and performed a number of dramatic pieces in remembrance of Caines, who was shot dead earlier this year in Sandy Point.

Matthews’ two-minute Talent performance got the judges’ nod as she amassed 146 points, while Marenborough scored 151 points to be declared winner of the Creative Wear segment.

Following the event, SKNVibes spoke with Marenborough who stated that it was not the time she had participated in such competitions but declared that she did not expect to win.

“I saw the competition as being a bit challenging because I felt that the other competitors were good in the various segments. But, overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to what is in store,” she added.

Fire Chief Everett O’Garro, though disappoint with the way the evenings proceeding went, stated that he was happy with the level of competition he saw and wished all the delegates well.
