Feuding CHS students and Cayon community members resolve issues

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

    Peace March slated for tomorrow

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT probably was seen as quite a risky venture but, in order to quell the violent feud that was taking place between school children and members of the community, it had to be done.

It was a mediation conference that saw the feuding parties - students of the Cayon High School and members of the Cayon community - police officers, parents, teachers, pastors, liaison officers etc. sitting down in one room and exploring the possible root cause of the feud.

It took place on Monday, October 31, 2016 and, believe it or not, the initiative was a success.

This is according to the Guidance Counsellor at the Cayon High School, Larissa Mars.

While speaking with SKNVibes, she explained that there might have been some trepidation going into the exercise but noted that an effort had to be made. And the Guidance Counselling Department of the school - which consists of herself and Noline Blanchard - spearheaded the planning process.

“We were having some issues with some students at school who were feuding with members of the community. The students are from the Lodge and Ottley’s areas and were having issues with past students from the Cayon community. It had been happening for years and we decided to bring all parties together and have a mediation conference. We tried to figure out what the issue was, where it started and try to bring it to some sort of resolution.

“It worked and we were left surprised at how well it went. The guys were initially very hesitant to sit across from people they were feuding with all these years. But at the end of night they actually shook hands and ‘daps’ each other and decided to end and stop fighting.”

Mars said there was a sense of relief, not only from the feuding parties, but also the other participants of the intervention.

“They students were relieved because they realized they didn’t have to walk with weapons to school anymore. So we definitely wanted to do it on a larger scale and hopefully it can mend some of the larger issues that cause this gun crime in our community.”

Part of that larger initiative, Mars explained, is tomorrow (Nov. 18) the Cayon High School would be observing what they have termed a Day of Peace. And as part of that day, a Peace March will be held, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

She explained that the march is the result of a suggestion made by a member of the feuding parties, Kamion Willett, who expressed that it would be a good idea to show to the wider community that by them walking together they are telling others it is possible to resolve differences without turning to violent means.

The march will begin at the Cayon High School Playfield, left onto Osbourne Street, right onto the Main Road, left at the Seventh Day Adventist Church and up into Waterworks, taking a left at the Anglican Church, straight onto the Main Road, left onto Wade Street (by the Cayon Police Station) and culminating at the starting point.
