Mr. Hype confident of capturing Power Soca Monarch title

Mr. Hype

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH just under a week before the first leg of the 2016 Soca Monarch Competition kicks off, former Power King Bjorn Bassue is fine-tuning his rhythm.

Better known as Mr. Hype, Bassue is confident that his song ‘Join Her’ could get him the nod for this year’s Power Soca King title.

The song, which was completed a one month ago, speaks to his new friend who seems to be enjoying every aspect of the Carnival but jealousy has crept in.

This jealousy sees him follow his friend everywhere she goes.

“The song speaks about me being asked to sit out Carnival this year, and I refused to because of this new female friend that I now have. And she goes to all of the different fetes, parties and the various sessions. Basically, anywhere and everywhere she goes I want to join her.”

Bassue however noted that there is a twist to the song, pointing out that the major theme is that “you don’t want to miss out on any of the fetes that are scheduled for the Carnival period".

Like many of the songs he sang in the past, Bassue finds the lighter side of the competition with his catchy and sometimes over the top lyrics.

He told SKNVibes that his songs are never too serious, because Carnival is the time when citizens and residents are coming out to enjoy themselves in whatever way they could.

“The music that we produce is never too serious, but, it brings the hype and excitement.”

The 2013 Power King explained that he had a number of songs playing in his head before he penned ‘Join Her’, but spontaneously the latter stuck out and that would be performed at this year’s Soca Competition.

“What we were trying to bring back was that the same vibe and feeling that we had when we first entered the competition back in 2013. So we were trying to find something that fits into that sort of vibe,” he explained.

Unlike his fellow Soca artistes who would have expressed some level of disappointment at the prize monies being offered at the competition, Bussue expressed mixed views, noting that despite the winnings are small, there are many other opportunities to fill the gap.

He pointed to competing at the International Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad in which he participated several years ago and also other musical performances that open up from winning the local title.

He however believes that the National Carnival Committee could do a bit more for the winners.

“For me, the competition is something that is fairly new to St. Kitts and Nevis and it is growing. So I believe that in due time it will increase. As it is right now, some persons are not too pleased or they don’t like the amount. But for me, I just feel that as the art form and as the show grows, so too will the prize monies.”

Currently, the winner takes home approximately $10,000, which is split between himself/herself and the entire team, including dancers.

This year’s competition kicks off on Thursday (Nov. 24), but the Carnival activities officially got underway last evening (Nov. 18) with a launch at The Circus.
