Estonia hold Sugar Boys to 1-1 draw

BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts - IT was an evening of redemption for local football enthusiasts, as the national team showed more resilience and determination in their 1-1 Friendly International against Estonia at Warner Park last evening (Nov. 19).

In a highly anticipated encounter, the home team drew first blood through a powerful strike from Devaughn Elliot in the 9th minute.

But Estonia fought back and scored the equalize before the 90th minute, as the Sugar Boys were playing a defensive style of football.

Speaking with the media after the game, Coach Jeffrey Hazel stated that it was a more improved performance from his team compared with that of last week against Haiti, as they stuck to the game plan despite reverting to their defensive style of play.

Hazel informed that most members of the team were selected from the U-20 line-up, as was stated by Vice President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association, Al Edwards in a recent media interview.

“We were happy to introduce them to the senior team, and they did remarkably well. It means well for the football in St. Kitts and Nevis for the future,” Hazel opined.

The game was played outside of the FIFA international window, which means that a number of senior players would have already returned to the various countries in which they ply their trade as professionals.

Estonia’s Coach, Martin Reim, told the media that the St. Kitts and Nevis team had played a game of high-quality football. He however noted that the condition under which they played was very humid.

“They [Sugar Boys] were very fast and strong players. They were falling but they were very defensive and returned very quickly to the game,” Reim said.

When asked how much the weather condition had affected his team’s performance, the coach pointed to the two water breaks taken during the match, adding: “It is not easy for such short time to be ready in this weather, because we had this minus degree and snow.”

He explained that his team had lots of scoring opportunities but they were off target.

“In the first half, we were not shooting on the goal and not giving good crosses. The second half was a little bit better as we started to be more direct with the goal, and some were good chances to score.”

Reim declared that it was a disappointing end for his team, but they would be going back to the drawing board as they look forward to their future encounters.
