Rudder’s ‘TUG’ comes to PM Harris’ defence

Nigel ‘Rudder’ Williams

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – BEFORE and even after being elected to office, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris faced many criticisms and, as part of the Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch Competition, calypsonian Nigel ‘Rudder’ Williams has come to his defence.

Listening to Rudder’s song – ‘The TUG’ – without paying much attention to the lyrics, one would believe that it speaks specifically to the Team Unity Government. But as he explained to SKNVibes, it actually explains how even while being criticized, Dr. Harris is being praised.

“The TUG came about because of some criticisms by the Opposition after Timothy Harris was elected. They said he looks like this and he looks like an old tug boat. But the idea behind it is…what they don’t understand is that a tug boat is always in front pulling and the engine capacity has to be powerful enough to pull other vessels. Sometimes, even if a boat is bigger than the tug, the tug has the capacity to maneuver that vessel.

“The song is saying no matter how people say he looks, he was elected to do a job and he will do the job he was elected do to. The tug leads from in front, so he will lead. They are trying to criticize him but they are inadvertently complimenting him, because a tug leads from in front.”

His second competition piece, which is more of a social commentary, is titled ‘It Happened Before’. This, he explained, is not a political song but one that addresses recurring issues and incidents around the world.

A portion of the song says:

“It is written there is nothing new under the sun
What we see as new inventions have been already done
So until we acknowledge God and his creations
Man shall be the means to his own destruction.”

“The message behind it is that things that happened before are happening again. So when we think it is something new, it actually isn’t. This has nothing to do with politics but world happenings”, Rudder told SKNVibes.

Most, if not all calypsonians, enter the Calypso Monarch Competition with the intention of winning the crown. Rudder said he is no exception and believes that he has material good enough to take him to the top.

Both of his competition pieces were penned by Socrates Hodge.
