Hamilton on relationship with Jr. Minister of Health

Senator Wendy Phipps and Minister Eugene Hamilton
By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – QUESTIONS of alleged discord between himself and his Junior Minister were today (Dec. 1) posed to Minister of Health the Hon. Eugene Hamilton and, while an answer was provided, it is felt that it left more questions than answers.

Hamilton appeared on Freedom FM 106.5’s ‘Issues’ programme and was questioned by the host about the relationship between Jr. Minister the Hon. Wendy Phipps and himself.

The suggestion or observation made by individuals in various quarters across the country is that Phipps appears to have taken a lead role in the Ministry of Health so much so that whenever an issue arises concerning health, the nation hears from her and not from Hamilton.

Rumours are rife that there is tension between the two Health Ministers with the Jr. Minister being favoured above the Sr. Minister.

Hamilton however stated on Freedom FM that people ought not to speculate, although his response to the host’s question about the relationship did very little to quash the rumours.

“The Senior Minister and the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Health have different roles, complementary roles. It is not everything that requires a response that the Junior Minister will respond to or everything that requires a response that the Senior Minister responds to. And because of that, if people take that to mean and to speculate whether the relationship is good or bad, then it’s a free nation.

“What I would tell you is this, if I am in any administration or any workplace and I cannot have a relationship with the person who works with me, then the relationship ends. So I don’t think that people should speculate about the relationship at this point, because we are only one and a half years into this government and I have just outlined to you the number of things that we are doing.”

Hamilton explained that uncomfortable situations would present themselves ever so often, but people will still speculate no matter the circumstance.

“Will we get it all right? Probably not! Some things will go wrong. If everything goes right, if you think that you can make everybody feel good about you, something’s wrong with you.

“So I’m saying to you, there are some things that will not make you feel comfortable at all. That happens in any sphere of life. But the speculation about the relationship, people will continue to speculate. They will speculate about Dr. Harris and I, they will speculate about Shawn Richards and I, they will speculate, people will speculate.”

He said the proof of the solidity of instability of the relationships within the government would be in whether or not the administration is able to make good on its promises.

“The proof of the pudding will be in the eating…when we deliver. If we deliver, then you know there is a working relationship that delivers. If we’re not delivering, then it will expose those of us who are not getting along or cooperating.”
