Queenie G explains ‘The Missing Element’

Queenie G
By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CALYPSONIAN Queenie G had her fans and supporters in a bit of suspense with her piece ‘The Missing Element’ that sought to address a situation which the Federation faced over the past two years. And for those who are not too clear on what the song is about, she had provided details to this publication.

The song begins with Queenie G speaking of her wedding day and the excitement that it brings. But because a particular element was missing, the tasks she had to perform in preparing herself to meet her groom were difficult, if not impossible.

She recently spoke with SKNVibes about her two competition pieces and explained that the missing element is water.

She was inspired to write this song after being challenged by her relatives to address the drought situation which the Federation encountered last year.

“It is not necessarily about the wedding. The event surrounds water, the lack of water. The element is water; water being missing on my wedding day. So I can’t do what I need to do, can’t prepare, can’t get ready to go to meet with your future husband. It really came from the shortage that we’ve had in the country. We still have it because we are still below capacity for what we are accustomed to.

“So I was really challenged to come up with a song by some family friends to do something different in terms of the calypso and see if you could put an element of suspense to it that would have people thinking as to what is the song really about but still using certain words that would give a hint into what the song is about.”

Her second piece, ‘When Kaiso was Kaiso’, is more entertaining than the previous and speaks to the musical value of calypso and how, especially in the older days, it was music that made people wanted to dance and enjoy themselves.

“When Kaiso was Kaiso is a throwback to old-time calypso. It throws a punch as some of the different aspects of calypso that we love, moreso the music of calypso. If you listen to some of the verses, they would tell you no matter what you sing, no matter what the lyrics are sometimes, persons don’t really pay attention to the lyrics; it’s the music people really listen to and how it moves them and helps them to make their day better.”

In last year’s Calypso Monarch Competition, Queenie G had advanced to the final round but did not place in the top four. She told SKNVibes that this year she is hoping to do better than last year.
