Christchurch anoint Lodge with first defeat in James Harris Cricket League

Cleon ‘Lads’ Browne of Christchurch clean bowls Craig ‘Hammerz’ of Lodge.
By: Peter Ngunjiri, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (December 5, 2016) -- The boys from Nicholatown (call it Christchurch if it pleases you) took the bull of James Harris Cricket League, Lodge, by the horns and handed the previously unbeaten side a seven wicket licking.

This decisive game which was played on Sunday December 4 at the Mansion Stadium was watched by a handful of spectators who had travelled from Lodge (expecting a formality win) and from Christchurch (expecting a miracle win) as the home crowd stayed away. It appeared as if the vehicles parked in the stadium were more than the actual spectators.

Lodge who came in with the sole purpose of continuing with their winning streak, having won all their preliminary stage games, batted first and made 43 for seven from their 15 overs with Ackazie Richard 19, while bowling for Christchurch Cleon ‘Lads’ Browne took two for 12, Showman Whyte took two for 12, and Zeen Pencheon took two for 9.

When it was the turn for Christchurch to bat, they knew that they had come in as the underdogs, having lost to Limers (one of the two home teams from Mansion taking part in this year’s league) on Sunday October 30.

The game was fast as the boys from Nicholatown showed no mercy to their opponents from Lodge and they ended up making 48 for three in 11.5 overs (from the allotted 15 overs) with V. Newton making 16, while bowling for Lodge their Jermaine ‘Winky’ Clarke was the only threat for the Nicholatown boys as he bravely took three for five.

‘Winky’ Clarke’s field bravado was not good enough for Lodge, as Christchurch won the game by seven wickets.

The result of this final game in this year’s preliminary stage of the James Harris Cricket League has sent the whole works into some kind of a tailspin as three teams (Christchurch, Lodge and Limers) now top the league with eight points each from their four individual wins. The only sure position is the fourth position held by Back Street with four points from two wins.

“Semi-final is on Sunday December 11 when first place will play against fourth place and second place will play against third place,” said League Coordinator Mr John Palmer. “However, net run rates will decide which one of these three teams is first, second and third as Christchurch, Lodge and Limers are tied on 8 points each. Back Street is the other team in the semi-final.”

Mr Palmer said that he would confirm the net run rates after he would have consulted with the scorers of the league.
