Indian Cultural Centre, High Commission of India, Presents Asian Northern Punjabi Folk Dance

    December 5th, 2016 -- On Friday, December 9th 2016, 6:00 PM, The Indian Cultural Centre in collaboration with High Commission of India, will present a free Performance at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Theatre. The Event is supported, in part by Tiranga Authentic Indian Cuisine Bar and Restaurant, Sun Island Clothes, private contributions, and coordinated by Mr. Ramesh Mulkanoor, CAO Windsor University School of Medicine.  

     

    The Asian Northern Punjabi Folk Dance Club sponsored by tiranga and sun island clothes is a registered dance club comprising of 12 male and female members. Along with promoting the cultural entrepreneurship, the aim of this group is to safeguard the timeless heritage of Punjab(Northern State of India).
     
    The club was formed under aegis of Mr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma who is simply passionate about the Northern Punjabi dance form ‘Bhangra’ since his childhood. The goal of the Asian Northern Punjabi Folk Dance Club is to preserve and share the tradition of Northern Punjabi dance and music with the world and to serve as a cultural resource to engage and enrich communities at home and abroad. 

    The program will include performances in: 

    Bhangra which was initially used as a celebratory folk dance which heralded the coming of spring, or Vaisakhi, as it is known. The lyrics sung with the beat of a 'Dhol' relate to social or cultural issues. Bhangra seeks to offer a message along with its music and dance. 

    Folk Orchestra (includes traditional instruments like Tumbi, Algoza, Dhadd, Flute, Bagdu, Chimta, Been, Dhol etc.) 

    Jhumar (It is a living demonstration of the happiness. This form includes emotional and  love songs and dance is performed in swaying motion) 
     
    Jindua (Jindua literally means "My Life". The lover and beloved address each other as 'Jindua' and exchange notes about the ways of the world.) 
     
    Giddha (On any joyous occasion in the family women form a semi circle clapping, singing and dancing, while two of these advance in front and sing and dance on tune of the song called 'Boliyan') 

    Malwai Giddha (traditionally performed by middle aged or older male dancers) 

    Folk songs (based on lives of characters like Mirza, Heer, Jagga etc.) 

    Harvesting Dance "Kirti Di Kuli" ( The song and dance represents the hard life of a small farmer) 

    Jawabi Chaallan (Two teams participate and engage in banter by dancing.)  

    Luddi (This  to dance is performed to celebrate victory in any field) 

    Summi (The dancers stand in a ring and swing their hands bringing them up from the sides, right in front.) 

    The club members have participated in various cultural and social festivals in India as well as internationally.  Including troupe performances in Germany, Turkey, Poland in April 2004.  Asian Cycling Championships in 2005 held in Ludhiana and the National Games held in Ludhiana. 

    They have also performed at the Dashain festival (Dashera) in Nepal. Performed at Plaza Carnival, Sector 17, Chandigarh in 2015 and at the Sukhna Lake in February 2016.
