Ten percent of Budget for Crime Fight

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TEN percent of the $713M 2017 Budget presented in the House of Parliament yesterday (Dec. 7) by the Minister of Finance and Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris has been allocated to the fight against crime and the maintenance of the safety of the people of the Federation. 

     

    In presenting the estimates, Dr. Harris informed that $71.7M has been allocated for the Ministry of National Security and under that umbrella are the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and Her Majesty’s Prison, among others.
     
    The Ministry of National Security is second only to the Ministry of Finance, which got the usual lion share, and for 2017 that total is $245.7M.
     
    The Ministry of Health received the third highest allocation of $62.6M, followed by the Office of the Prime Minister which was allocated $45.4M, while $44.7M was allocated to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Posts, Urban Development and Transport and $30.3M to the Ministry of Education.
     
    The Ministry of Sustainable Development and those of Foreign Affairs and Aviation have received near equal sums with the former receiving $19.4M and the later two a combined sum of $19.3M.
     
    And the Ministries of Youth, Sports and Culture has been budgeted $18.1M with the Ministries of Agriculture, Human Settlement, Cooperatives and Environment receiving $13.8M and the Ministry of Tourism $13.9M.
     
    The Ministries of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communications have $13.7M at their disposal with $12.2M being allocated to the Office of the Attorney General.
     
    For the Ministries of Community Development, Gender Affairs and Social Services, $9.1M was allotted and the Ministries of Nevis Affairs, Labour, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Affairs received $7.8M.
     
    At the disposal of the Ministries of International Trade, Industry and Commerce is $4.2M while the Parliament has been allotted $1.8M and the Audit Office is to receive more than $1M. 
     
    The Office of the Head of State, the Governor-General, has been allotted $1.84M.
