Carnival Committee ready for Regional Pageant; less delegates may be on show

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE two local representatives at this year’s National Carnival Committee's Caribbean Carnival Queen Pageant are ready to wrestle the other 10 beauties for the crown.

The delegates were introduced to the public last evening (Dec. 14) at a cocktail and reception ceremony held at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel.

According to Rhonda Devent, who chaired the proceedings, the Pageant is a unique one in which the 12 participants would bring a different flavour of their individual Carnival events to the stage.

“We want these girls to be Ambassadors of their country and also Ambassadors of their Carnival. All of these beautiful girls that you see here are Carnival Queens and contestants, so that really was the deciding factor. We want them to come out and show what their Carnivals are about.” .

Explaining the concept behind this new addition to the National Carnival Calendar, Devent pointed out that St. Kitts-Nevis has one of the leading Carnivals in the region and, with that in mind, the Committee had decided to give everyone a full Carnival package to represent their nations in the Federation.

“A full Carnival package includes regional pageant.  We have been doing extremely well in regional pageants and we thought that it was time that we host our own, seeing that we have several reigning queens. We also wanted to give everybody the opportunity to represent their country and their country’s Carnival.”

She said that from the feedback they received thus far from the public, it indicates that it would be a large turnout and an exciting evening of pageantry.

However, there is one negative response the Committee received that it cannot rectify at present, which is the timeframe for the Pageant.

“The only complaint I have heard about having this Pageant is the fact that we decided to hold it early in the month. It is actually one of the most looked-forward-to Pageants. You know we are having all the big activities after Christmas when people are coming home. The thing is Christmas is Carnival here in St. Kitts and Nevis and, however, for many of these ladies Christmas is time spent with their families and we don’t want to keep them away,” Devent said.

The Pageant is facing a problem, in that several delegates may not be able to participate in the event as they are currently finding it difficult with the regional airline having to fly them into St. Kitts and Nevis. And last evening this was evident as only six of the 12 contestants were present at the ceremony.

Two delegates who were en route to St. Kitts for the official launch did not arrive on time. The delegates are from Guyana and Jamaica. `

“We have 12 registered contestants, but I am going to be honest. They have been having difficulties flying in. We have had cancelled flights, we have heard people not getting flights, and some had flight delays, but we are optimistic that all delegates would be here.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, Hon. Shawn Richards called on the girls to enjoy their stay in the Federation while developing a bond beyond the stage and the night of the competition.

Patrons will see the girls being judged in five segments, while one lucky person would have the opportunity to walk away with a television set.

Popular entertainer Rohan ‘Quiet Perry’ Perry will lay down a special performance during the show.

The Pageant will be held on Saturday (Dec. 17) from 8:00 p.m. at the Carnival Villager in Warner Park.
