VHS takes Talented Teen 2016 crown

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THERE is still celebration in the Verchild’s High School camp coming off of a victory the institution had at the Talented Teen Pageant last evening (Dec. 26).

A large crowd gathered at Sugar Mill (Carnival Village) to see seven beautiful and talented teenagers vie for the Miss Talented Teen 2016/2017 title and to support their candidate.

The Gingerland Secondary School (GSS) was represented by Lucia Parris Liburd, Anusuyah Bhoojraj represented the Basseterre High School (BHS), Dolcia Barry was the representative of the Verchild’s High School (VHS), Sarai Hutchinson represented the Cayon High School (CHS), for the Saddlers Secondary School (SSS) was Tatyana Browne, Zafi Alder was for the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) and the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) was represented by Dahneira Hodge.

The crowd’s favourite contestants for the evening were CEMSS, VHS and CHS and as it turns out, these took the top three positions at the end of the evening.

In the Third Runner Up spot is Hodge of WAHS with 780 points and ahead of her by 42.5 points in Second Runner Up Position is Alder of the CEMSS. And just 4.5 points ahead of her in the First Runner Up position is CHS’ Hutchinson. The VHS’ Barry amassed a total of 889 points to take the crown.

Following their opening number, the ladies took the stage in the Ambassadorial Speech and the Ambassadorial Wear segments, all appearing relatively relaxed and confident.

However, the Talent and Evening wear segments were of particular interest to many in the audience as most highlighted issues affecting our society.

The GSS contestant’s talent was a tribute to one her heroes – the late Michael Jackson, while the BHS’s candidate focused on the cultural melting pot that St. Kitts is. The contestant for the VHS began her presentation with a monologue in which she explained the hardships she suffered having to take many tests to figure out what was ailing her. Providing her own musical accompaniment on the piano, she vowed to overcome and performed Andra Day’s ‘I’ll Rise Up’.

The CHS contestant played the part of an individual incarcerated for committing crime and ended up having to visit a psychiatrist. Her presentation ended with a calypso about being given one more chance despite her past wrongs.

All facets of society were named as culprits in contributing to what the SSS’ representative said is the ‘Bandit Factory”. She appeared on stage as a judge and handed down her ruling to parents, the police, the Christian Council etc on their failure to nip the problems of deviant behaviour and delinquency in the bud. Her presentation ended with a dance to King Konris’ ‘Take the Oath’

CEMSS representative played the part of a young girl who witnessed a murder(s) committed by her brother. She was town between her devotion to her family and her love for her country. And in the end, she broke the silence.

Given the opportunity to succeed, the WAHS contestant squandered it all on material things and even prematurely becoming involved with a male. She redeemed herself however having been given a second chance and encouraged her counterparts to take advantage of the opportunities for the success.

The young ladies gracefully made appearances in the Evening Wear and Interview Segments which – for the most part – were well executed.

The Best Ambassadorial Speech, Best Interview and Best Ambassadorial Wear awards went to VHS’ Barry, the Best Performing Talent award went to CEMSS’ Alder while the Best Formal Teenage Wear award was given to CHS’ Hutchinson.

VHS also won the award of the Most Popular Contestant Online while CHS won the Miss Photogenic Award and the Most Spirited School Award.

The Chairperson’s Award, the Chaperone’s Award and the Miss Amity Award all went to BHS.
