Mighty T dominates Junior Calypso Competition, dethrones reigning monarch

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THOUGH small in stature, the ‘Mighty T’ stood head and shoulders above his opponents in the Junior Calypso Competition last evening (Dec. 26) where he topped the list to be crowned the Junior Calypso King.

The son of veteran calypsonian Calypso Craig, Tquan McDowell performed ‘From the Grave’, a song representing all that a son – possibly killed in his prime - would have told his parents and society, should he be able to speak from the grave.

His competitors were: Jahnika ‘Lady Jen’ Francis who sang ‘Solid as a Rock’, Akedo ‘Prince Akedo’ Nisbett who performed ‘Gun Factory’, Shomari ‘Mighty Sookie’ Mitchell who performed ‘Let’s Stand Up’, Jahniah ‘Lady Niah’ Roach who performed ‘I Want to be a Hero’, Tresjeur ‘Empress Trej’ Dedier who sang ‘Change’, Tyrique ‘Simply Mighty’ Jeffers who sang ‘Cool with School’ and defending her crown was Tiandra ‘Singing Sensation’ who sang ‘Black Lives Matter’.

Sixth to hit the stage, the Mighty T told SKNVibes he was evidently confident and performed his piece well.

Singing Sensation seemed to have lost her edge during this competition and placed Third Runner Up with Simply Mighty placing Second Runner Up. And just behind the King is the Mighty Sookie.

Just last week, the Mighty T’s brother Z’Quan ‘Mighty Z’ McDowell participated in the Primary School Calypso Competition and did not do as well as he would have liked. The Mighty T indicated however that he did not win the crown just for himself but also for his brother, whom he said was happy about his success.

The Basseterre High School student – by virtue of his win – receives an all-expense-paid trip to Barbados in August of 2017 where he will represent the Federation in the Caribbean Junior Calypso Competition.

His competition piece was written by his father and Queen Anastasia and the budding calypsonian told this publication he will shortly begin the process of preparing for the regional competition as well as next year’s local competition.

Calypso Craig, who has been singing calypso since the late 1980s said his sons had always supported him in his endeavours and he was pleased when they approached him last year indicating that they wanted to sing calypso.

“They have always been supporting of me. I never wanted to push them into it and so last year, when they came to me and said they wanted to sing, I was very pleased. Last year was their first time competition. My younger son placed First Runner Up and the older placed Third Runner Up and this year they decided they wanted to come back for the crown. Unfortunately, the younger one did not do too well but the older one won the crown.

The proud father said he is encouraged and believes that from “what we are seeing now with the primary school and junior competition, I think calypso has a bright future and would not be dying soon in my opinion and once I have anything to do with it”.
