SKNFA describes 2016 as historical year for the Federation

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS the local football league has taken a break for the Christmas/Carnival Season, the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) had declared that 2016 was a “historic year” for the Federation.

This comes in the wake of the National Under-20 team having qualified for the final round of the World Cup Qualifiers; the National Men’s Senior team making the final round of the Caribbean Cup - narrowly missing out on the CONCACAF Gold Cup; and the country’s footballers achieving their highest FIFA world ranking of 73rd.

General Secretary Stanley Jacobs, during an interview with SKNVibes, stated that the year has been a very successful one for the SKNFA and by extension the local football fraternity, adding that they would be looking to capitalize on their success from the Caribbean Cup.

“We believe that we were able to accomplish these great achievements through our development programmes that we have put in place over the years. This year has been tremendously successful for us in terms of our national team.

“We had a very successful 2016 Caribbean Cup, we had good results and we, of course, did not get the results to push us into the Caribbean Cup. But nevertheless, it has left us a foundation that we can build on going into 2017 and beyond.”

Speaking of the Under-20 team’s success, Jacobs pointed out that that was the second time the junior team had qualified for the final round of such a competition, noting that it “puts us essentially in a good position for a team from St. Kitts-Nevis of advancing to the World Cup”.

“All in all, it has been a very successful year for us when you put those things together,” he retreated.

Locally, the National Bank-sponsored Premier League has been competitive from all aspects of team play, Jacobs noted, stressing that they have seen increased support from the public at all games.

He claimed that it speaks well for the development of football; in that the enthusiasm has returned to the public and is spilling over to the grassroots level.

Jacob highlighted that their grassroots programmes are growing as it saw them spinning off the U-14 Atiba Harris League, which has caught on with the youngsters.

“So when we look back at 2016, we believe that it has been great for us at the SKNFA. Very historic and greater things are in stored for 2017,” he declatrd.

Action in the local league will resume in January with the second round of matches in the Premier League.
