Carrying on her mother’s – Singing Angie – legacy

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SHE paid keen attention to the steps her mother - Singing Angie - took to advance her calypso career, and having departed this life some years ago, Little Miss Attitude has moved into the limelight and is taking the calypso arena by storm.

Anandee Collins Richards – known in calypso circles as Little Miss Attitude is participating for the first time in the Sugar Mas Calypso Monarch Competition and is already making waves.

She is small in stature but her dexterity in performance is evidence enough that she is worthy of being named among the finalists in the competition.

Tomorrow evening (Dec. 29), she goes up against the likes of reigning Monarch King Astro, her writer and veteran calypsonian King Socrates, and others including Calypso Craig, Queenie G and Lady Diva in the finals.

Her mother left a legacy in that she was the only individual to win three consecutive calypso crowns in Green Valley and Little Miss Attitude has declared her intentions of entering that competition next year.

And already, Little Miss Attitude has been able to accomplish what her mother never did.

As King Socrates explained it, “She has already established that she can carry on the legacy of her mother. Her mother never made it to the finals, she never made it to the semi-finals. And Little Miss Attitude has. And one of her songs is called ‘Pedigree’, she has got the calypso pedigree but she has actually capitalized on her mother’s legacy and is taking it forward which is a very good thing.”

Socrates explained to SKNVibes that he was Singing Angie’s mentor and he now has taken her daughter under his wing.

“I’ve taken up the same challenge with the daughter. We had discussions couple of years before when she wanted to sing with my other band so I was aware of her talent and I wanted to sort of give resurgence to the female calypsonians. It was previously dropped by the former chairman and I thought it should not fall by the way but they (the female calypsonians) were little in numbers. So I sought to improve the number of competitors to make it more of a demand for female calypsonians.

“That was my approach in getting people who have talent and an interest. So I did approach Little Miss Attitude in that regard and of course she has done exceedingly well for her first time in the calypso arena and in the soca arena as well.”

The newcomer said when she was a child, she was always with her mother even when she went to and performed at shows. She explained that from that exposure, she vowed to be just like her mother.

“So I took it upon myself and came out of my shell and decided that I would do it… I would sing calypso. I always loved singing so why now follow in her footsteps to do better? You never know… I might five-peat.”

Coming out of her shell was not easy though; by Little Miss Attitude’s account, it took about two years…two years of practice and confidence-building.

Last week, the budding entertainer participated in the final round of the Power Soca Competition and was unsuccessful but this week alone, she has the chance to win two crowns. In addition to the Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch competition, she will be taking part in the Female Calypso Show which takes place on Saturday (Dec. 31).

“I am ready, I am set on ready for Thursday and Saturday. I am ready, ready. I am going for the crowns.”

Her songs for both competitions are ‘Pedigree’ and ‘Check Me in January’.
