BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is reporting that the street activities of Sugar Mas 45 were generally peaceful and orderly but dozens of individuals were arrested for minor infractions.

The Commander of the Basseterre area - Superintendent Lionel Moore - told SKNVibes that revellers were generally well-behaved in comparison with former years.

“So far, the Christmas/Carnival season 2016/2017 went well. I think most of the revellers cooperated with the police and security personnel without any major incident. Notwithstanding, last night we made a few arrests for some skirmishes which took place around the Basseterre area.

“In comparison to other years, this was a good one. In terms of turnout and activities, they were orderly and went well. I must mention the Grand Parade in particular which began on time and I commend those involved for that…”

Superintendent Moore informed however, that more than 24 individuals were taken into police custody during the J’Ouvert jam, Grand Parade activity and Last Lap session. He said some were arrested having committed minor infractions including disorderly conduct by fighting, while others were arrested as a means of preventing the escalation of certain situations.

And while most have since been released from the Police’s custody, the Superintendent said a few remain and would possibly be charged shortly.

Both the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force had an active presence during the street activities and were interspersed within the various crowds.

These officers included Inspectors and Superintendents of Police, as well Assistant Commissioner of Police Merclyn Hughes and Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley.

Revellers are expected to return to the street for a Victory Jam on Saturday (Jan. 7).
