SKNFA sets sight on U20 FIFA World Cup

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - COMING off of a historic year for football in the Federation, officials at the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) are looking to continue with that feat in 2017 when the Boys U20 team look to book their spot at the FIFA World Cup in Korea.

This comes as the youngsters have qualified for the final round of their zonal qualification in the CONCACAF region where they would come up against several of the top teams within the region, such as Mexico, Canada and the United States.

In a recent invited comment, General Secretary of the SKNFA, Stanley Jacobs noted that they are looking forward to the final round of the tournament that is to be played in San Jose, Costa Rica in February.

“We look forward to early in 2017, the CONCACAF Under-20 Finals in Costa Rica which our U20 Boys will be competing to advance to the Under-20 World Cup.”

He said it would be another historical achievement for St. Kitts and Nevis football, should the team qualify for the World Cup in May.

The junior Sugar Boys, during the final round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), lost 3-1 to Bermuda before rebounding to hold Leeward Islands’ rivals Antigua and Barbuda to a 2-2 draw.

Needing a victory, the Sugar Boys dispatched the home team Curacao 3-1 to qualify as the best fourth-placed team in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Jacobs noted that this year is expected to be an active one for the female teams as they too begin their campaign to qualify for the World Cup.

“This year is the year of women competitions and in 2017 we would see the Under-17 Women in competition, the Under-20 Women in competition, and the Senior Women in competition for World Cup qualifications.”

He noted that “the year is shaping to be a very active one for the local footballers” as the men are expected to play a number of international friendly matches in order to keep up their ranking, with the hope of making further leaps up the table.

However, last year, the Federation’s senior men’s team saw the retirement of captain and MLS star, Atiba Harris.

He bowed out of international duties after the Sugar Boys narrowly missed out on qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup when they lost in their final match to Haiti.
