Eight charged, senior police calls for good behaviour during victory jam

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OF the 24-plus individuals taken into police custody during the street activities of Sugar Mas 45, eight were slapped with charges of disorderly conduct by fighting and simple wounding.

This was confirmed by Commander of District ‘A’ Superintendent Lionel Moore.

He said the others were released from custody sometime after they were picked up by the authorities. And the eight, were charged and subsequently granted bail.

Notwithstanding these arrests, the Superintendent had praised the public for the generally-good behaviour exhibited during the J’Ouvert, Last Lap and Grand Parade events.

And as the Grand Masters Band – the Sugar Mas 45 Road March Champs – gears up to hit the road this morning (Jan. 7) for its victory jam, Superintendent Moore told SKNVibes he hopes that the generally-good behaviour among the revellers continues.

“I urge persons to come to the other events for the Carnival 2016/2017 season with good behaviour so that everyone can enjoy themselves and not get involved with the security forces. We are there to provide a service, to ensure the safety and security of all and as such, we want persons to come with their best behaviour and cooperate with the police and the other law enforcement agencies.”

The victory jam – according to the Chairman of Carnival, Noah Mills, is to take place along the stretch of the F. T. Williams Highway which sits between the gas station and the airport roundabout.

The event is to begin at 6:00 a.m. with the procession moving eastward in the first instance. As it gets to the end of the route, it would then flow in the opposite direction and follow that trend until the time comes for it to end.

By winning the 2016/2017 Road March title, the Grand Masters Band was successful in breaking the Small Axe Band’s four-year winning streak.
