BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has removed its first illegal firearm from the streets of the Federation for 2017.

The find, according to a press release issued by the organization, was made by a patrol team last evening (Jan. 11) while it was in the Upper Cayon area.

“During the patrol…the officers observed suspicious activities and commenced a detail search of the area. The extensive search of the area revealed the illegal firearm wrapped in a plastic bag…The illegal firearm was seized and ballistics analysis will be carried out.”

The firearm is a Mac 10 pistol and it was found with an accommodating magazine which housed 19 rounds of .9mm ammunition.

The officers involved in the operation, according to the press release, have been praised by Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley for displaying situational awareness and allowing their training to take control when the situation presented itself.

The communique quotes him as expressing, “Situational awareness and your continued commitment to citizen safety has paid off; you went into an area and thought something was amiss and your training instantly kicked it.  Last night we removed another illegal firearm from our communities.

“Only a few days ago, at my special lecture our speaker told us about the importance of keeping our axe sharpened, I can see you paid attention, and last night you demonstrated your sharpness. Stay focused, Great job. Well done."

The Police Force was successful in removing 36 illegal firearms from the streets during last year and it is hoping to have greater success this year.
