UPDATE: Driver charged with causing death by careless driving, granted bail

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN autopsy was performed, today (Jan. 12), on the child who was struck by a motor omnibus earlier this week and the driver of that vehicle has been charged by the police.

     

    On Monday afternoon (Jan. 9) Leshawn Jones – who is seven year old – was in the vicinity of the 4-Mile mark in Keys Village when motor omnibus HA127 – which was travelling towards Basseterre’s direction - struck him.  

     

    The vehicle was being driven by Kevin Lawrence of Harris’ Village.

     

    Jones was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. He succumbed to his injuries early yesterday afternoon.

     

    Lawrence, who had gone to the Basseterre Police Station shortly after the incident, was in custody up until yesterday (Jan. 12) when he was released.

     

    He was taken into custody again and charged today with causing death by careless driving, Superintendent Henry informed. He is expected to appear before the court for a bail hearing this afternoon and the senior officer indicated that the Police would not be objecting to bail.

     

    Jones is the Federation’s first 2017 road fatality.

     

    UPDATE: The Police Force's Press and Public Relations Office released information this afternoon (Jan. 13) indicating that Lawrence was bailed in the sum of $50,000 with two sureties and as a condition of it, he it to surrender his travel documents and report to the Cayon Police Station twice per week.
