Relay competition this weekend at Kim Collins Athletic Stadium

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Kim Collins Athletics Stadium will come alive this weekend when the 2017 athletics season kicks off with the inaugural Giant Malt Schools Relay Championships.

According to Track and Field Coordinator at the Department of Sport, Timothy Morton, the event was conceptualized by organizers looking to have a new product within the school’s athletics calendar.

He explained that they wanted an event that would complement the TDC-sponsored Interschool Athletics Competition held annually in March.

“For some time now, the schools have been saying that they need another track and field Meet. And we opted to put it early in the year so that it doesn’t compete with any other major events on the schedule.”

Additionally, he explained that because the Meet would be held in early January, it requires all the school-based athletes to train throughout the year, “hence no time to lose their fitness because it would have them have a bit of consistency in their training”.

Morton also explained that the competition, which would be held on Sunday (Jan 15), has so far seen a total of 10 educational institutions registering to participate.

Included in that group are the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, and football and athletics clubs

The competition will be divided into various age categories ranging from the under-14’s up to the 23-andover, and the open category.

The first event is expected to begin at 3:00 p.m. and ticket prices range from $15, $10 and children $5.
