Calls made for women football to be given more exposure

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING their victory at the 2016 Carnival Cup, Winners Circle Newtown United female team would like to see more emphasis being placed on women’s football in the Federation.

With the local league resuming after a short break for the Carnival period, Manager of the team Lynda Isaac is hoping that 2017 would see more opportunities in women’s football.

“I am looking forward for them (SKNFA) to push the women more, expose them some more. We need to give them overseas exposure in terms of competing with various regional or international teams,” she said.

That call might be answered as General Secretary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association, Stanley Jacobs had recently indicated that this would be a busy year for local footballers, women included.

According to Jacobs, the women teams would be in action as they begin participating in a number of world cup qualifiers.

“This year is the year of women competitions and in 2017 we would see the Under-17 Women in competition, the Under-20 Women in competition, and the Senior Women in competition for World Cup qualifications.”

Isaac, speaking to her team’s success at the Carnival Cup, pointed out that the league had a good start to the season thus far.

She noted that the teams involved were looking forward to competing and the interest the players are showing in the sport augurs well for women’s football within the Federation.

“We are looking forward for the Football Association to put more effort into the ladies’ game. The Elvis Star Women’s League Team (Newtown) has been going for a long time and I have been going with them for a number of years and we need to continue to support the girls…”

Isaac commended the way in which her team played throughout the competition, noting that she would be investing more interest. She also wished them success for the remainder of the season.
