January 20th, 2017 -- The Hon Saboto Caesar, area representative for the South Central Windward Constituency, a rural district in St Vincent and the Grenadines has launch a Millennium Sustainable Development Community Project.

The objective of the project, launched on January 3 has as its objective, to adopt a grassroots approach towards the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs, officially known as Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a set of seventeen inspirational "Global Goals" with 169 targets between them. Spearheaded by the United Nations, through a deliberative process involving its 193 Member States, as well as global civil society, the goals are contained in paragraph 54 United Nations Resolution as of 25 September 2015.

According to Minister Caesar, the United Nations must be credited for crafting a global developmental road map. He however noted that until these goals become a part of the day to day lives of citizens of all works of life, "we cannot truthfully say that the goals have been achieved."

Caesar, who have been the area representative since 2010 desires that these goals be popularized in South Central Windward. The objective being to set the constituency as a model in the systematic attainment of the goals with a view to them being established in the everyday conversation of the average Vincentian citizen.

The goals of the Millennium Sustainable Development Community Project are: No poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and Infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production and climate action.

"Over the next few months critical assessment will be made at the constituency's level of development as it relates to these goals will be done through the form of interviews, questionnaires and town hall meeting."

"It is intended that this model will be replicated as a best practice in small island development states," Caesar further outlined.
