By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, January, 16, 2017 -- Educators within the Federation are currently engaged in a workshop that will improve the overall reading proficiency of students.  The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States has partnered with USAID to provide and fund the Early Learners Programme (ELP), to assist in this initiative.

The OECS/USAID Early Learners Programme Pilot workshop, targets eleven (11) schools within the Federation; seven (7) in St. Kitts and four (4) on Nevis.  Participants of this workshop include both Principals and Teachers from kindergarten to grade three (3).

Mrs. Jacquelyn Bassue, Reading Coordinator at the Curriculum Development Unit and National Focal Point for the reading programme explained the status of the ELP. “In June 2016, a baseline reading assessment was conducted, administrators were trained and twelve (12) grade two (2) students, of all schools, were assessed to identify areas where students had difficulties.”

Following the assessment that was done in 2016, this workshop is next in the series of actions.  “In September (2016) the results were analyzed and reported, the professional development training that is being done now, seeks to enhance those areas which students were havening difficulty with during the assessment, stated Mrs. Bassue.

From 23rd January – 3rd February facilitators will train participants to deliver, design and monitor effective literacy learning that uses constructivist based, learner-centred pedagogy and lead literary education, with an emphasis on reading in the classroom among other useful teaching tactics.
