Antoine Adams sets goals for upcoming international athletics season

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the Federation’s talented young sprinters, Antoine Adams, has his sight set on remaining fit for the entire upcoming international athletic season, as he works toward bringing more glory to the country in the track and field arena.

Adams and other athletes from St. Kitts and Nevis have their eyes focused on qualifying for the 2017 IAAF World Championships slated for London, England.

And Adams, who recently took time out from his training schedule to compete at the inaugural Giant Malt Relay Festival with the national team, told reporters that his main aim is to compete on the international stage at full capacity.

He indicated that during the early portions of the outdoor season, he is looking to produce credible times before competing at the World Meet.

“Every year, my aim is to run faster and faster. I am not doing any indoors this year, so my offseason preparation is a lot longer this year. I am more focused on the outdoor season and getting as strong as possible. So, once I am healthy I will try to run as fast as possible.”

The 28-year-old specialises in the 200m and he would be looking to lay down the gauntlet on the track when he competes, as he currently seeks to attain the qualifying standard for the World Championships.

Reflecting on his 2016 season, Adams revealed that it was an up and down year for him, indicating that most of the goals he laid out were not attained.

“I did not get to achieve what I wanted to, especially at the Olympics. It was my first Olympic Games (and I) got to the semifinals. I didn’t get out of the first round; I had a lot of ups and downs, lots of injuries and it is just one of those things that you have to bounce back from.”

Despite coming off that disappointing season, the very reserved athlete was all smiles as he brushed aside any talk that it would spill over and affect him in 2017. Instead, he recommended that the only thing that could be done “is taking every moment one step at a time”.

“For me, I set a lot of personal goals and then set out on achieving them. For example, I set out on a quest to become a professional athlete. For me, it is just about getting to those goals and then see how far I can get in the sport before I can call it quits.”

Over the last two years, he has been improving his performances and this year he would seek to medal at the World Championships and return with an individual distinction.

Currently on his resume, he has a Bronze medal that he won with the relay team at the 2011 Champions in Daegu, South Korea.
