BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HOME TEAM - the Leeward Islands Hurricanes - hit the self-destruct button last evening (Feb. 2) to trigger a batting collapse that saw them going under to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by 11 runs in the latest round of the Regional Super50 tournament in Antigua.

Playing at the new home of the Cricket West Indies, the Coolidge Cricket Ground - formerly the Stanford Cricket Ground - Powell and his team won the toss and inserted the Red Force.

They quickly made inroads into the visitors’ batting, when young pacer Alzarri Joseph removed Kyle Hope for 2, with the score on 8.

After a slow start on a track good for batting, the Red Force weathered the storm to post a below par 229 for 9 off their allotted 50 overs, on a ground with small boundaries.

Nicholas Alexis top-scored with a brilliant half-century, gaining support from Imran Khan (45 not out) and Jason Mohammed (32).

Jason Campbell was the pick of the bowlers bagging 5 for 37 from his 10 overs. Joseph gained 2 for 65 from 10 overs and Nkrumah Bonner took 1 for 29 from 5 overs.

In reply, Leeward Islands Captain Kieron Powell (52) and fellow opener Montcin Hodge (82) guided their team to a solid 115 run stand before the former was dismissed by Khary Pierre.

Though the opening stand was substantial, the middle order found it tough under the lights in St. Johns.

A 9 for 100 batting collapse would not have been a bad situation in many regional games, but the in-form Hurricanes could not stave off defeat by the Red Force team looking to climb the points table.

The Hurricanes closed their innings on 215 all out, handing the Trinidad and Tobago team the full four points to move up the table in Group A.

Rayad Emrit’s 3 for 49 and Pierre’s 4 for 40 were enough to give their side the much-needed victory.

The Leeward Islands Hurricanes would now regroup as they take on the English side, Kent Spitfire, tomorrow at the same venue in a day/night encounter.
