Good Governance track record reflects Team Unity Administration’s commitment to Kittitians and Nevisians

By: (PRESS SEC), Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 15th, 2017 (PRESS SEC) — Tomorrow, Thursday, February 16th, 2017, is the second anniversary of the resounding election victory of the Government of National Unity, and as a lead-up to this milestone Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, Cabinet Ministers and other officials in his administration held one-on-one consultations with people in all of the constituencies in St. Kitts yesterday, Valentine’s Day.

Last night, Premier the Honourable Vance Amory hosted a well-attended reception at Occasions in Pinney’s, Nevis, in honour of the people.

The decision to spend some time with the people of the country on the day of love signifies the deep commitment of the Team Unity Government Ministers, who already regularly make themselves available at convenient times and places, to hear the needs, concerns and feedback of the public.

Yesterday’s individual meetings, which took place in the late afternoon, also represented the first time in the nation’s history that a government had designated a day for key members of its administration to undertake wide-ranging, informal and personalized discussions on the ground in various communities.

Prime Minister Harris, whose one-on-one consultations with people took place at the Edgar T. Morris Primary School in Tabernacle, said yesterday, Tuesday, February 14th that, “Interestingly, they not only came from within my constituency [Constituency #7, which is Belle Vue to Ottley’s], but also from outside of the constituency. The matters discussed ranged from the very private to other general matters to do with housing, scholarships, jobs, and, of course, requests for lands. These matters will be processed in due course…  None of the issues raised were beyond the ability of the government to deliver.”

Dr. Harris also said that, “I want to thank those who came, for ensuring that they took advantage of the opportunity to relate to me both as a Member of Parliament and, perhaps more particularly for those from outside of the constituency, as a Minister and as Prime Minister of the country.  It has always been for me a very productive exercise to engage close up and face to face with the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, and today [February 14th] was no exception.”

The night before, at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall in Charlestown, Nevis, the Honourable Prime Minister spoke in front of a large, exuberant crowd during the fourth installment in a series of town hall meetings titled Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity.  The first Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity town hall meeting was held on Tuesday, January 24th in Molineux, the second one on Tuesday, January 31st in Cayon, and the third one on Tuesday, February 7th in Newtown.

During the fourth town hall meeting on Monday, February 13th, Premier Amory, who is Senior Minister in the Government of National Unity, told the audience that, “We are the people for the people of this country.”

The Honourable Premier added that, “No government has reported to the people in the way that this Team Unity Government has reported over the last two years.  We believe that we have to account for what we do, and it is in accounting for what we do that we can say to the people that we are in fact providing good governance, providing the type of accountability to you, but also making life better for you.”

The fifth Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity town hall meeting will be held tonight at the Challenger’s Community Centre from 7:30pm, and the general public is specially invited to attend.  For the benefit of persons who are unable to attend, ZIZ Television (www.zizonline.com/tv/channel-5/) and Radio (95.9, 96.1, 96.3 and 96.9 FM) will provide usual live coverage.

Scheduled to speak tonight at the town hall meeting are Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Shawn Richards and the Honourable Lindsay Grant, who is the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #4. The Government Ministers will respond to questions from the audience in attendance, as well as to those that come via questions@gov.kn. A phone-in segment will also accommodate questions from persons who call (869) 466-3555.

Last year, the Government of National Unity held five town hall meetings titled Discussions for Prosperity in Molineux, Newtown, Sandy Point, St. Peter’s and Dieppe Bay between July 18th and August 23rd.
