Residents express confidence in the Team Unity Government during one-on-one consultations

By: OPM, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 15th, 2017 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Scores of residents used Tuesday’s one-on-one consultations with Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris to express their satisfaction with the work of his two-year old Team Unity administration.

The one-on-one consultations, held at the Edgar T. Morris Primary School in Tabernacle, formed part of the week of activities to mark the second anniversary of the Government of National Unity.

Among those who spoke directly with the prime minister on Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Lanval and Telmor Abbott.

“We just came to air our views and wish him well in his endeavors. It is a great experience when one would get to meet the prime minister and could have a little one on one to discuss whatever issues you might have or concerns or even to share a little encouragement,” Mrs. Abbott said.

In 2016, the Abbotts were able to secure a loan under the government’s Fresh Start program which they used to expand their egg farming business in Phillip’s village. Mrs. Abbott said that program, along with others introduced by the government since taking office in 2015, are testament to the positive work of the Team Unity Government.

“For the two years that the Unity government has been in power, personally I know for myself that they have done a great job. I am one of the proud recipients of the Fresh Start loan that helped us to get our Abbott’s Egg Farm, so I know definitely that Unity has been doing a great job, will continue to do and can do more for this country.”

Mansion village resident, Marcia Govia commended the prime minister for his accessibility and compassion, adding, “He is a good man, he is reasonable, he can understand our needs, our problems, our sorrows and I just want to say thank you to him very much and may God bless him. They have been doing wonders for this country, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. We can see the work they are doing in health, in education and in many more stuff so may the Lord continue to bless them.”

Prime Minister Harris, the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency seven, thanked the residents for coming out and airing their concerns and opinions on the work of the current administration.

“We had quite a number of persons, interestingly they came from within the constituency and also I had visits from persons who live outside the constituency. The matters discussed ranged from the very private of which one cannot disclose to other general matters to do with houses, scholarships, jobs and of course requests for lands. These matters will be processed in due course and we hope to be able to bring some solutions to those particular concerns. None of the issues raised were beyond the ability of the government to deliver and I am hoping that we would be able to do that in good course,” Dr. Harris continued.

With the one-on-one consultations taking place on Valentine’s Day, the honourable prime minister surprised a number of his constituents with gifts. He said, “We introduced that novelty today by bringing some symbolism to the day being Valentine’s Day and I presented to the first 12 females a rose reflective of the love of Valentine and equally today with the help of my constituents, we were able to provide a few bottles of wine to the first few males that came in for this one-on-one consultations. That was a symbolism of the love which I hold for the people of the constituency and the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The Team Unity Government’s two-year anniversary celebrations continue on Thursday, February 16th, 2017, with a sitting of the National Assembly at 10am.

During that sitting, the Attorney General and Minister responsible for Justice and Legal Affairs, the Honourable Vincent Byron Jr, will seek leave to introduce and have read a first time the Land Registry Bill, 2017.

The Land Registry Bill, 2017, is a Bill to establish a national land registry and to provide for electronic searches, the preservation of records and related matters.

At 4:30 in the afternoon, officials will gather at The Circus in downtown Basseterre for the official launch of the Skills, Training and Empowerment Programme (STEP), a programme Prime Minister Harris described as “an important manifesto commitment” that will replace PEP.
