BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE National U-20 Male football team will be vying for World Cup glory today (Feb.18) in Costa Rica, as they are determined to create an upset in the tournament.

The final round of World Cup Qualifiers and the Finals of the CONCACAF Tournament began yesterday. However, St. Kitts and Nevis is slated to play their opener today against Haiti at 14 hours Eastern Caribbean Time.

According to President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), Anthony Johnson, the team would be looking to cause a number of upsets in the tournament.

He noted that the exposure of the team is very important as the youths are the ones who would be stepping up to be part of the next generation of senior players.

“I think that it is critically important for us because of the exposure that we would gain from such tournament, the players in particular. However, having said that, we are not just in Costa Rica to make up the numbers, we intend to do our best and we expect, I believe, that we would be in for a surprise.”

The Sugar Boys would be looking to lay the foundation in their opening encounter for a long run in the tournament.

Grouped with the likes of Haiti, United States of America and Panama, the Sugar Boys must be one of the two teams in the group to qualify for the second round of the tournament.

Making the final round, they will be slotted in one of two groups, and the top two teams from those groups will gain automatic qualification for the Korea World Cup later this year.

Johnson reiterated his congratulations to the team for making it this far for the second time and is optimistic of World Cup glory.

Team St. Kitts-Nevis encounter is the opening game in a double header at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma that would also see Panama taking on the United States of America.

The Sugar Boys will then move to the Estadio Nacional, San Jose on the February 21, where they take on Panama, before closing out the opening round against the United States on February 24.

The CONCACAF Tournament runs from February 17 to March 5.
