By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2017 (SKNIS)—On Monday, February 13, the formal meeting of the Cabinet took place. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

    1. Cabinet met on 13th February for the first time in Nevis at the Four Seasons Resort. The historic first sitting of the Federal Government in Cabinet was a sure sign of the closer bonding and atmosphere of friendship that abounds between the Nevis Island Administration and the Federal Government, and the people of both islands since the advent of the Dr. Harris-led Administration. Cabinet also recalled other firsts in Nevis, namely, the Independence State Service of Thanksgiving in 2015, the Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series in 2016, the joint visits and talks by His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Tapley Seaton and Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris to students in 2016, and the appointment of Nevisians to high offices in the diplomatic service, all under a Government of National Unity.

    2.  Cabinet confirmed lead presenters for the “Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity” Town Hall Meeting at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlestown, Nevis, on February 13, to be Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, Premier of Nevis and Senior Minister, the Honourable Vance Amory and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, the Honourable Mark Brantley. The town hall meeting forms part of the week of activities to mark the Government of National Unity’s second anniversary in office since winning the general elections of February 15, 2015.

    3.  Cabinet expressed its gratitude to all for an excellent start to the Government of National Unity’s Week of Activities with the inspiring church service at the Co-Cathedral of Immaculate Conception at East Independence Square and the massive “I Believe” Gospel Concert featuring several local gospel artists and choirs and internationally renowned American gospel singer and song-writer, Jonathan Nelson, at Greenlands Park on Sunday, February 12. The concert was dubbed as the largest concert held in the Federation in living memory. All artists performed exceptionally.

    4.  Cabinet approved a number of Bills for Parliament, including the Land Registry Bill, 2017. Cabinet also examined requests for the naming of the Mental Health Day Treatment Center, approved concessions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), studied further financing for the HELP programme, and looked at a proposal for further developments at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw (RLB) International Airport.

    5.   Cabinet approved a list of countries with which it will initiate partnerships under common reporting standards. Cabinet confirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability and to being a responsible partner in the international efforts to prevent financial crime.
