SKN bow out of World Cup reckoning

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE St. Kitts-Nevis Under-20 football team - currently in Costa Rica competing in the CONCACAF championship - had their World Cup bid dashed, when they were hammered 4-nil by Panama yesterday (Feb. 21).

Coming off a defeat at the feet of Haiti in their opening encounter, the Sugar Boys needed a win against Panama to keep their Korea World Cup dreams alive, but they were outplayed in every department.

In an even contest in the first 30 minutes, the plot was lost with the Andres Andrade Cedeno netting in the 39th minute to break the deadlock in Panama’s favor.

Three minutes into the second half, the score was then doubled when Leandro Avila netted.

But the proverbial salt was rubbed into the wounds of the St. Kitts-Nevis players when Ricardo Guardia Avila scored a double in the 57th and 65th minutes.

The defeat left team St. Kitts-Nevis rooted at the bottom of the group as they now have two losses, with Panama qualifying for the next round, after the United States of America brushed aside Haiti 4-1.

Even with a victory against the United States on Friday, the Sugar Boys would not be able to get out of the group - thus eliminating them from the competition.

This is the second time that the team would have fallen at this stage of the competition after going out in 2007.
